Homestead Exemptions

The Homeower’s Principal Residence Exemption Affidavit allows you to claim an exemption on your home which will lower your school tax bill.  For you to be eligible for this exemption, you must own and occupy our house as your legal principal residence by May 1 of each year.  You may only claim one house as your principal residence.


Property Transfer Affidavit

This form must be filed whenever real estate or some type of personal property is transferred (even if you are not recording a deed). The completed Affidavit must be filed by the new owner with the township assessor within 45 days of the transfer.


Parcel Divisions

The Land Division Act of 1997 requires that the division of land be approved by a land division review official. The application process and the review of land divisions will be a key tool for accurately recording land divisions in Wawatam Township.

Deferment of Summer Taxes

Summer taxes may be deferred until February 14th. To qualify for this deferment a household income cannot exceed $35,000. The applicant must also be 62 years of age or older, paraplegic, quadriplegic, eligible service person, veteran, widow or widower, blind, or totally and permanently disabled. Additionally, those that farm agricultural real property may also qualify.


State Tax Affidavit for Disabled Veterans Exemption

Apply for an exemption of property taxes under MCL 211.7b, for real property used and owned as a homestead by a disabled veteran who was discharged from the armed forces of the United States under honorable conditions or his or her unremarried surviving spouse. The property owner, or his or her legal designee, must annually file the Affidavit with the supervisor or assessing officer any time after December 31 and
before, or until the conclusion of, the December Board of Review.
